Coronavirus and the election? Thank heaven it's over

Things are weird in the Corey-Knapp household. I just found a draft of a post I wrote in July but never published. Oh well, that's old news.

We're going a little stir crazy. Oh, we've been out of the house. We've gotten haircuts, gone shopping, been to the dentist (both of us), and even a few doctor's appointments. Okay, more than a few--remember, we're old.

But now that we're both retired we would like to be traveling, to somewhere other than Whole Foods.

And now this (as John Oliver would say)-the election!

I am stunned that so many people could vote for Trump after these past four years, especially after these past eight months. But I'm particularly stunned that people who call themselves Christians could vote for him. When I see signs like "Catholics for Trump" or learn that friends of mine think he's done great things for the economy, I realize that we live in two different Americas.

A friend recently posted on Facebook "Well, now we know why Biden did not have to campaign very much. He KNEW he was going to win! What is the point of having an election day deadline if you can keep counting ballots days afterwards? Were those Biden ballots ready to go if Trump were ahead???? Something is rotten in Denmark."

I was shocked. And even more shocked by the comments. No one seemed at all concerned about the over 225,000 people in this country who have died from COVD-19. A big issue (which was a bit off the original post) was that Trump is "pro-life." Ah, the abortion issue.

Most religious people used to believe that life began at the first breath-the understanding is that is when the body breaths the "breath of God." Somewhere along the line, the understanding by some became that life begins at conception. Glennon Doyle, in her book Untamed, says this on page 241:

"In the 1970s, a few rich, powerful, white, (outwardly) straight men got worried about losing their right to continue racially segregating their private Christian schools and maintaining their tax-exempt status…In order to regain control, they needed to identify an issue that would be emotional and galvanizing enough to unite and politically activate their evangelical followers for the first time.

They decided to focus on abortion. Before then--a full six years after the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision--the prevailing evangelical position was that life began with the baby's first breath, at birth. Most evangelical leaders had been indifferent to the Court's decision in Roe, and some were cited as supporting the ruling."

I haven't had a chance to confirm this but it certainly is food for thought.

We were so happy to hear that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have won. I breathed a sigh of relief. Unfortunately, my friend is now carrying on about how Biden and Harris support late-term abortions.

President-elect Biden (oh, it feels so good to write that!) will have a big job. Our work goes on, and I'm under no illusions that the world will suddenly be peaceful and just. But I do feel that we are in the right hands, under the right leadership, and moving in the right direction.

And all God's people say, AMEN!!! ;)

What we're seeing now is White Christians watching their make believe world becoming smaller and less significant. The supremacy they have always enjoyed, as Christians and as White people is losing its potency and they're afraid of what that means. They will no longer be able to use it to control others and are losing their identity as that's all that they have. In these last days for them, they will fight like cornered animals to preserve their privilege. We can expect it to get worse before it gets better.

Unfortunately I think you’re right. And it’s a shock to my system!
